Buying a home is a big step in life, and we’re here to help you take it. At New Bern Real Estate, our commitment is to guide you through the process of home buying to help you achieve your goals and to help you fulfill your dreams. We recommend that you see a lender to prequalify for a loan and determine what you want in a home. We will show you available homes and take you through the purchase process, from the smallest details of making an offer to the moment you sign the purchase papers. You can count on us; we’re here to help you.

Homeowner’s Insurance
Think of insurance as protection for your biggest investment--your home. Just as you took so much care to find the right home for you, shop around to find the right homeowner’s insurance. As with any legal contract, both you and the insurance company have responsibilities. You must protect your home from damage from insects and must maintain it. Your policy states what the insurance company covers and does not cover. Read the policy carefully. You may need additional coverage, for example, for jewelry and a swimming pool. Your insurance policy also covers the contents of your home, and the personal liability coverage is your first defense against costs and legal fees in the event of an accident.

Home Inspections
Home inspections are not crystal balls, but they can give you insight into the future. Choose your home inspector wisely; you should seek out an inspector who is licensed or certified. Then ask for a thorough checkup on the house. Inspections typically cover all structures, appliances, and mechanical and electrical systems and include checking for water penetration. You also may want the inspector to check the following: evidence of wood-boring insects, a gas line, swimming pool or spa, sprinkler system, and septic systems. (Not all inspectors may offer these services.) If possible, arrange to be present at the inspection to ask or answer any questions.
